A boot sale find from years ago on the London label from 1960.
A curious mix of MOR cocktail jazz and impersonations of instruments like trombone, trumpet and double "Slam Stewart" bass etc. Some corny gags thrown in for good measure.
Not much gleaned from the internet but the sleeve notes written by Leo tell us that he has toured the world with his show, from the London Palladium, China Theatre in Stockholm, Australia and the Far East and now Africa. He was in the navy and then television on such shows as "Wish You Were Here" and now cabaret. He is accompanied on this record by Andy Johnson - drums, Manny Parkes - bass and Arthur Heatley on tenor sax and alto sax.

Thanks for these - I well remember Leo de Lyon's visit to South Africa around 1960. He was very funny. There's nothing like these old recordings to bring back the memories...

Thanks CJ. I must confess i hadn't heard of him either until I found this LP. Its amazing what oddities you find at boot sales and flea markets! Most of my musical discoveries are found in this way.

ReplyDeleteI saw Leo at a benefit show in Long Beach, California, probably in the 1960s. Great performance.
I saw him again at a Salvation Army benefit, in Van Nuys, maybe in the early 1990s. He still had his stuff! (It was probably the same sketches!)
I know Leo has done some voice work with Mel Blanc and others in the industry.
A very talented but under-recognized guy.
