Happy Monsters
A really odd record I bought today at a boot sale. It was released on the Happy House label ( Made In America ) in the 60's I imagine. One side a has a story and the other is all songs ,or rather, tunes- sub funk backing tracks that have percussive intruments like bells, marracas and squeakers layered over the top in a strange haphazard fashion. The resulting mess is quite alarming! I recognise a few tunes here including James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag". Maybe you can spot some others? Goodness knows what children thought of this when it was played at their parties!
Happy Monsters - Ooog Frug
Happy Monsters - Monster Rock
Happy Monsters - See See Monster
Happy Monsters - Clap Your Tentacles
Happy Monsters - Kiss Me Goodnight
Happy Monsters - Adventure In The Land Of Oog
These SendSpace files are available for seven days or until exhausted.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you posted this record!!! I used to have this record as a child and it was my FAVORITE album! Loved it until my mom got in a fight with my dad, took it off of my record player when I was listening to it in the living room, and broke it over my dad's head during an argument! lol Fun times!
Anyway, great flashback---thanks for posting this!!!
Wow - glad this brought back lots of happy memories for you psycchic1 !!
ReplyDeleteAny chance of posting the A-side?
ReplyDeletethat's some wacky wax
ReplyDeleteAmazing to find this here! I too had this record in the early 70s when I was a child. My brother and I played it to death.
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance of a repost of the sound files?
My apologies, I thought the sound file links weren't working, but I've managed to download them all now.
ReplyDeleteAs psycchic asked - is there any chance you could post sound files of the other side? The story was the part that I remember from back then. The only part I recall was someone falling down a very deep hole and hearing a band (the Happy Monster band, I think) in the distance, playing Three Cheers for the Red White and Blue. :D
Good to hear the files are still working. I will try and find the record again for ther other side but it may be a while yet.
ReplyDeleteLuckily found the record at the top of the pile so here is the story side. Hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your efforts! I really appreciate you taking the time to capture the other side.
ReplyDeleteI've researched this record several times over the years, and only ever found a few references to it, and one image of the cover. Never had I found actual audio of the record.
It's very strange to listen to it again after over 30 years. I can't wait to send it to my brother.
Thanks again!
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it again after all these years.
ReplyDeleteLike other posters, I too have fond childhood memories of this album. My parents got to the point of hating turning the album over for me, so they taught me how to use the stereo -- even before I learned how to turn on the TV. Later, I learned how to replace stereo needles. Eventually I carried it with me to Grad School (not because I was still listening to it but because my parents wanted me to move out of their house) where (sadly) it was stolen.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the tunes!
I had this album as a kid and only vaguely remember it, but as soon as I saw the cover, it was very familiar to me. I used to like to think the cute orange guy was the narrator from the story, even though he was supposed to be invisible.
ReplyDeleteI'm too late to hear the sound files, though. I searched for years until I could find another childhood favorite, "Space Alphabet" and someone had a recording of that one to download.
Thanks for the great image. The Internet lets us relive our childhoods.
Thanks for dropping by thomhaha and concept junkie. I guess this one struck a inner chord with a lot of people hence the number of comments.
ReplyDeleteGlad to bring back some nice memories of childhood for you.
Oh my, my, my, sadly too late to hear the recordings but I too fondly remember this album in my very young years. My dad would play it, after endless beggings from myself and all my siblings. We would listen intently to the story, acting out each scene (as we knew it by heart) then 'dance' frantically to the b-side. I do remember finding the b-side kinda creepy but loving it. That was my first recollection of anything American - thought they were kinda crazy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding many of us, it seems, of happy memories.
Any chance of posting both sides?
Hi there. Any chance you could repost this LP. I had it as a kid and have been wanting to hear it for many years. Thank you. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks brit and pup don. Will try and sort it out for today- if i can find it again!
ReplyDeleteAny luck? I can't believe I can't find anything about this anywhere else online. I'm so happy someone else remembers it. :)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThe Earth Leakage Trip track that sampled this record has taken on cult status with my drawing friends. Would you be able to upload the story side again?
Thanks, Ben
I'd love to hear this again, we used to go and stay with my mum's friend when she had her driving lesson during school holidays and I always made her play this, her kids were older and didn't want to hear it again so there was always a battle! Can you make the files available again? I've missed them by a year or so!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm with Lee. Please post it again. I get email notification from the comments so if you do, please post a notice here so I don't miss it again. Thank you so much. You have no idea what this means to those of us who grew up with this record and don't have any way of hearing it now. :)
ReplyDeleteaaaw I've searched loads for this as well and this is the first time I've found your site. Please please can I add my pleas to repost so that I can let my son listen to it :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks all. If you look more recently at December posts 2009 you will find it. Still available to download.

ReplyDeleteWow - A total blast from the past. We got a free copy of this record with a Kinder chocolate egg way back in the 70's. My brother, sister and myself have many happy memories listening to the story and strange music. Really love the strange land of ooog. "not just monsters - Happy Monsters!
