I think this LP on the Drobisco label was found at Brick Lane in the 80's or 90"s. Not sure of the date. Ghanain "Highlife" played on brass instruments which is unusual I think - I certainly havent found any others. The internet isn't much help this time and no mention of Asiakwa except that it is a village in Ghana.

Brass instruments (as parts of a band) were used a lot in 60s highlife, though.
ReplyDeleteAre you familiar with any of the highlife recordings on the Original Music label? (All o.p. now.) There's a lot of guitar-band highlife, also larger ensembles with brass on those releases - compilations of recoreings form the 60s and 70s.
As part of a band yes, but ALL brass instruments is pretty rare I think. Not heard any of Original Music label but have a lot on Melodisc and obscure African labels. I will upload some more soon. Thanks for your comment ellen.
ReplyDeleteFantatstic, Thanks & Cheers!
ReplyDeletemichael, this is the 1st time I've heard an all-brass highlife recording, but my guess is that a lot of local brass bands play(ed) whatever was/is in style, just as in other parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteCheck the "Frozen Brass" series on Pan, for example; also some of the Cuban and African brass band titles that have been out on Buda Musique. (I don't own any hard copies of them, but I believe they're all o.p.)
Any chance of re-uploading these tracks?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback Frankie. If I find it I will certainly uplaod it again.
ReplyDeletePlease reupload amigo ! Would love to hear this.... If you upload somewhere like rapidshare it wont expire so quickly...
